Aiko
Lady Aiko, born in Tokyo, has been living and working in New York since the 1997 where she studied an MFA at The New School Media Studies. She began her street art career as an assistant to the famed Pop artist Takashi Murakami and has collaborated with several street artists, including Banksy.
Aiko created her signature stencil ‘Bunny’ at Banksy’s studio, where she first sprayed it onto his bathroom door while she was visiting England. When asked what it’s like to work within a male dominated genre of contemporary art Aiko had this to say, “It was fun to work with boys but I really wanted to make something for myself’.
Aiko translates as “Love,” and she succeeds in infusing all of her work with the spirit of this namesake. Being a mixed media street artist, she uses stencils, glitter, spray paint, acrylic, and other materials on unusual surfaces such as mirrors, found wood, and car hoods. The images created refer to popular culture and allude to themes of sexuality, femininity in a refreshing take on the street art style.
