Anthony Foster

Tony Foster is a practicing free-lance artist and arts tutor. Taking private and commercial commissions his work has been seen in both England, Europe and the US. Tony has taught in a wide variety of techniques in life drawing, painting and clay sculpture.

Graduating from Manchester Polytechnic in 1981, Tony gained a BA Hons in 3D Design but found a home in the world of advertising, and for many years visualising ideas through markers pens and fine liners.

There has been a continued focus on the importance of the line through Tony’s work. The use of dipping inks, with all it’s unpredictability became a natural progression from the use of marker and charcoal line used in the construction and draughting stages to become a central element of Tonys work. Particularly on the larger scale canvas and murals.

The technique of sgraffito in clay sculpture has also become another important tool. Excavating through the painted surface, to add texture and depth has become just as important a consideration.

Canterbury Cathedral with its sheer presence in the medieval town, is a constant on the landscape and can be seen as either a shining light or simply a survivor. The use of sgraffito has parallels to ancient marks on interior surfaces throughout the church, ancient graffiti and the course the ubiquitous brass plate. The works hope to achieve a sense of recording a moment in time alongside a celebration of a architectural masterpiece.
