Cathy Burke

Catherine Burke painted prolifically during lockdown, having rediscovered a passion for painting. Formerly an opera singer, musical theatre performer and actor, Cathy has previously worked behind the camera for the BBC and independent TV companies. Recently, she secured an agent and has returned to the business after a long absence raising her two sons, one a current and one a former chorister at Westminster Abbey.

Cathy loves colour and the feeling of freedom painting in acrylic gives her. Her art has become an important channel of expression for her, allowing her to address some of the struggles she has experienced in her personal life. Exploring the interplay between colour and music, Cathy has always been struck by the effect colour has on our senses and the way paintings can move us just as deeply as a melody, harmony, or counterpoint in music.

Cathy’s work is inspired by whatever captures her imagination, but her overriding belief is that colour influences our emotions and makes us happy. She has developed a spontaneous, energetic style, with most of her art created alla prima, in one wave.

Cathy only recently moved to Canterbury in 2024 with her family, as her elder son started at The King’s School as a music scholar. Since moving to the city, Cathy has founded Country Manor Concerts - a concert series devoted to bringing classical music into some of the most exquisite historical buildings in Kent.
