Cherry Tewfik

A potter for fifty years, Cherry Tewfik works mainly in stoneware and porcelain, with gold, glass, and oxide inlays and coloured slips and clays. After studying ceramics at Christ Church College in Canterbury, Cherry developed her unique style of pottery during her time working in North and East Africa, Singapore, and Malaysia. In the early 1980s, Cherry established a number of rural potteries in Malaysia in collaboration with the Museum of Pekan and the British Council. She has had several solo exhibitions in Singapore and with the British Council in Kuala Lumpur. She is a member of the Kent Potters Association and has a studio in Canterbury.

“My multicultural background has been a leading influence in my pots. My patterns and decorations stem from my life in Kenya and Malaysia, my shapes and forms from Thailand and Libya, my glazes from China and Japan. I decorate my pots within laid sgraffito and multiple applications of glaze, pigment, and lustres, to create ceramics with a rich and varied surface”.
