Edward Waites

Born in Suffolk in 1988, art has been a passion of Edward Waites since a young age.  Completely self-taught, Edward turned to sculpture at the age of sixteen, and since leaving school has dedicated himself exclusively to this medium.

His early work was mostly figurative, concentrating specifically on human anatomy and musculature.  More recently, he has expanded into animals and wildlife, and his work is now shaped by his rural surroundings and personal connection with nature, focusing on the vitality, energy, and grace of the natural world.

Based near Newmarket, Edward’s approach is very immediate and hands-on, and from very early on in his career, he has worked closely with the Suffolk foundry that casts his works.  Following the ancient lost wax method, Edward works first in clay and then casts in bronze, bronze resin, and silver in limited editions.  This age-old process demands both time and skill, and each commission takes several months to complete.  His fascination with the animal's form and presence comes through in each piece, and one could say is almost exaggerated, with each one of his sculptures capturing the animal’s personality in an adopted position that is not necessarily typical of the respective animal, thereby adding an individual and quirky aspect to each piece.

Ranging from the small-scale to the monumental, Edward’s sculptures feature in distinguished public, corporate, and private collections around the world, including several royal collections. Notable commissions include those for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh, the ruling family of Dubai, and Lord and Lady Bamford.
