Frank Johnson was born in London in 1937 and later became a local to Canterbury.

He gained a national diploma in design at Camberwell between 1955 and 1959, and made 3D exhibits for the Natural History Museum, London, from 1961 to 1973. He went on to study for a diploma in art therapy, Herts., and attended the College of Design between 1974 and 1975. Johnson worked for Voluntary and Statutory Services as an art therapist and day centre officer in Kent between1975-97.

Once retired, Frank devoted his time to playing the cello and painting as much as possible.

 He said of his paintings:

“I enjoy creating formal set-pieces which evoke a mood of mystery and promise with a touch of humour”.
