Rainna Erbas

“My pottery story started at school - Astor College for the Arts in Dover - at GCSE level. I didn’t know what ceramics was then, but it sounded right up my street for a GCSE option. Never did I imagine it would become my life. I went on to study the subject further at A-level, and then at graduate level at Canterbury Christ Church University”.

After leaving university, Rainna Erbas dabbled in ceramics for a few years before going “full pelt” into projects - and she hasn’t stopped exploring and experimenting with her chosen medium since. “I wouldn’t say I have a style. It’s a rather eclectic range of work I produce. I am constantly learning and love to pass on what I know to others. I believe that if you stick to one style, range or technique, you are not allowing yourself to grow with knowledge and as an artist. I like to focus on the process rather than the end result. Saying that, I do make some functional pieces as well, seeing as pottery is a big part of everyday life - you can’t have a cuppa tea without a mug!”.

Artist in Residence at Ashford School from 2020/21, Erbas has also worked for several years with Future Foundry and Ceramics Art, Dover, two local organizations where she is surrounded by creatives. Together, they bring opportunities for the local community to engage in the arts. In July 2019, they held their first Clay Date event, not realising how much interest the community would have in ceramics.

An exciting chapter in Erbas’ life was being part of the Channel 4 show The Great Pottery Throw Down in 2020. “What an experience that was! Many highs, many lows… and a great bunch of people to share that experience with.”
