Sandy Haddock

To understand Sandy is to understand her paintings. She is a throwback to a time when we walked the earth in greater harmony with nature. She intuitively understands that one of our primary purposes in life is to appreciate and, if we are lucky enough, enhance the beauty around us. Whilst working as a Montessori nursery school teacher, Sandy was inspired by the wonder and enthusiasm of the children who still retained the power to live in the moment. Life seemed more colourful and vivid when looked at from their perspective. Combined with a love of dance, these are the two starting points of Sandy’s paintings.

Sandy studied graphic design at Canterbury College of Art and pursued several careers within the art industry including working for a design studio, advertising agency, printing company, and a Mayfair art gallery. She has taken several courses including silk screen printing and children’s book illustration, during which she won first prize in a children’s storybook competition held by the V&A. She has taken early retirement and now produces pet portraits, which she sells for a children’s cancer charity, and seascapes, mainly of the Kent coast. Sandy lives in Kent with her husband and her dog, Sasi, and can often be seen walking her dog in Deal, Sandwich, and the Canterbury area.

Sandy’s passion is for capturing the ever-changing colour, light, and movement of nature.

She works mainly in acrylics but often mixes sand and glue to create texture in her paintings. Sandy loves nothing more than her trips to the seaside. Feeling the wind, smelling the sea, and observing the movement of a living seascape fills her with awe and wonder and inspires her to sketch and plan her compositions en plein air. She is particularly drawn to the coast around Sandwich and Broadstairs where the changing light can transform the sea view in the blink of an eye.
