Sir Peter Blake

Peter Blake is an artist known for his association with the Pop Art movement in Britain. Alongside David Hockney, Patrick Caulfield, and Richard Hamilton, Blake sourced imagery from popular culture in colourful and distinctly graphic works. From the late 1950s his paintings became especially distinct due to his use of imagery from music hall entertainment, wrestling and advertisements. Peter Blake is well-known for his artistic input in the music industry. He has been commissioned for numerous album sleeves such as The Who’s Face Dances (1981) and WHO (2019), the Band Aid’s Do They Know It’s Christmas? (1984), Paul Weller’s Stanley Road (1995), and the Ian Dury tribute album Brand New Boots and Panties (2001) to name a few. He is perhaps most well-known for creating the album cover for The Beatles’ Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band in 1967.

Born on June 25, 1932 in Dartford, Kent, England, Blake studied at the Gravesend School of Art and the Royal College of Art. On The Balcony (1955) and Self Portrait with Badges (1962) are two important works for the artist, reflective of his early painterly style and contribution to Pop Art. He currently lives and works in London. He was awarded the title of Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in 1983 and a Knighthood in 2002 for his services to the visual arts.
