Anthony R Thomas

Born in Ramsgate, Anthony R. Thomas lives and works in South East Kent. His artistic career has spanned over 50 years.

Anthony initially trained at Maidstone College of Art in the 1960s, where he was lucky to have benefited from contact with top British artists including David Hockney. Whilst studying for his first degree, he apprenticed for two years in the Woburn Studio of professional artist Derrick Greaves. He graduated in 1967 with a first-class honours degree in Fine Art and Printmaking. During his long teaching career, he taught art at A-level, diploma, and pre-degree course level, assisting his students in developing their careers, whilst constantly working on his own skills in painting and printmaking, using techniques that combine traditional painting with contemporary approaches.

In April 2010, he had a solo exhibition at the David Burley Gallery, Birchington, entitled ‘Boats and Coasts’, which included oil paintings depicting the shores of Northumberland, Dorset, and Kent. Inspired by the changing effects of light, he continues to produce works that examine light, shadow, colour, and atmosphere. Inspiration for his latest series of miniature easel paintings comes from visiting unique abbey and cathedral sites and observing Thanet’s coastline.
