Frank M. Hirshfield
“Having passed 70 years, I have decided that for the most part, I will over the next 70 years concentrate on drawing and sculpture with only occasional forays into precious metals.
I first showed at Gallerie 65. Rue d’Antibes, Cannes in 1956 or 7 sharing a backroom with Lorjou.
I then left College (the Central) after a few months being taught what I had been already making and indeed selling. I then “apprenticed” myself to Fanaroff for 4 years and carried on working in his metal workshop for many years after that; I still look to him for advice.
I opened a workshop cum-gallery-cum-school in Paris, then Avignon. I could not escape the ramifications of owning a solid interest in my part of the Paris Studio complex, when faced with hungry developers who wanted the whole street…. having been a wrestler I knew just the right moment when to submit – highly profitably!
Between 1961 and 1969 (except for wrestling activities…Olympic team training, yes I’m serious) I exhibited at de Beers, Gallerie du Siècle, the Design Centre. Gallerie Cadichon, Precious Works at Ogdens (Burlington Arcade), Cameo Corner. Harrods, Heals and Libertys, Lacloche in Cannes, etc etc etc etc. I was the founding (only) teacher at the National Crafts Workshops in Tel-Aviv which brought Arab Israeli and Immigrant Artist Craftsmen under one roof.”
