Heather Meyerratken

Heather Meyerratken is an Australian who lived in the United Kingdom for fourteen years during which time she has completed a Fine Art and Design Degree at Brighton University and a MA in Visual Arts and Printmaking at Camberwell Art College, London in 2013.

In Meyerratken’s ‘Mistaken Identity’ series, images are screen printed on a steel mesh support. The title, Mistaken Identity, makes reference to the notion of obscured or lost identity of the figures contained within the printed image. It is in this loss of identity that the images become familiar and relative to the viewer.

From the classic wedding shot to classic cars, there is always something most of us can identify with perhaps prompting imprints of memory, story and loss. However, it is the unique printing onto wire mesh that encourages yet another layer of loss to the image. A particular fragility aligned with faded memory. This occurs naturally during the mechanics of printing in the form of pixilation and is relative to how the ink remains partially suspended within the mesh. The image becomes both translucent and lenticular. As one moves to the side of the image the colours become more intense and as you move to face the image it fades.

Meyerratken states, “ Universally we discover stored boxes of photographs and slides within our families. Often we don’t know the people in these photographs and yet there is a knowing that they are intrinsically part of our life story. It becomes a puzzle to figure out just who these people are. Who are they and where do they fit into our life story ? ”

Heather Meyerratken currently lives in her native Australia.
