As regards my Figurative painting…
A Far wiser artist than myself once said,
” I think one’s art goes as far and as deep as one’s love goes. ”
I couldn’t have said it better myself.
As regards my landscape paintings…
I love the feeling of being alone in the landscape, breathing it in, sensing the subtle shifts of light and colour as the day closes down or opens up.
If I am looking at a city, I’ll imagine the lives contained within. The hopes and dreams of all those people, the little victories, the small defeats.
Once I’ve sketched, drawn and annotated the view, over and over, it finally begins to sink in. When my feelings for the subject have deepened, when I’m feeling as if I’m part of the place, rather than just looking in from the outside then it may be real enough to paint.
I think the only way to know something is to put the hours in. Like painting, like life.
Previously John has exhibited four times at the National Portrait Gallery in London. One of his paintings was also chosen to be in the hardback book, ‘500 portraits’ published by the National Gallery.
John has had numerous solo exhibitions, and over one hundred group shows in London an America, and has been featured in numerous publications.
