AIR is Garry Raymond-Pereira’s fourth show at Lilford Gallery and perhaps his most experimental. It consists of around forty new paintings, most os which have been made this year. His focus is upon his usual favourite subjects and locations across the UK, focusing in on trees, the sea and windswept dunes. More than ever a fascination with where the sea meets the land, resulting in a series of marsh paintings.
This year more than ever, colour has been paramount to these paintings, often vibrant colour, focusing in on wildflower and heather, the bright pinks of a cherry blossom and the verdant green of a summer woodland.
What distinguishes this exhibition from his previous shows at the Lilford Gallery is that much of the work has been made on location outside, taking in the ‘Air’. Large pieces rather than small studies, oil on canvas, made in the field. Unlike his previous works made like this, he has not tampered with these works back at the studio, instead leaving them to breath and mature on their own.
There are a few unusual pieces as well, a painting made with a silverleaf, and a very technical carousel painting and a seascape housed in a restored antique frame that calls to mind the first painting he fell in love with at a museum. There is also a funny little bird study
